It will be interesting to see what Gerry has to say as well as what questions are asked. He apparently accepted the invitation on 3 July 2007 .
The father of missing four year old Madeleine McCann will give the Richard Dunn Memorial Interview at this year’s MediaGuardian Edinburgh International Television Festival (MGEITF). Gerry McCann will be interviewed by Kirsty Wark about the use of television in the search for his daughter and the pivotal role that the media has played in his family’s tireless campaign to find Madeleine.
Gerry McCann is scheduled to be interviewed at the Edinburgh International Television Festival today according to this summary.
Gerry and Kate McCann’s tireless campaign to find their daughter Madeleine has been a media phenomenon this year. Gerry McCann is convinced that the power of television and our 24 hour news culture is vital to their search and will discuss how he thinks other people in similarly unthinkable situations could use the power of the media to their advantage.
It is an event he agreed to attend many weeks ago. In light of the recent media coverage, it would be interesting if he would make the same decision to appear. Ironically it follows:
Who’ll Win the Web? Newspaper and TV bosses battle for on-line supremacy
The internet is throwing up fresh challenges for the old media. It’s driving us away from our television screens and onto our computers, and it’s making the print media rethink what their role might be in the future. With broadcasters and newspapers both trying to harness the internet who will emerge victorious? In this session we bring together some of the biggest players in television and newspapers to look at what they are doing – from vodcasting to selling programmes online- to make sure the internet does not leave them behind.
Updated exerpt from a Festival interview:
The father of missing four-year-old Madeleine McCann has asked the media to end the constant speculation about his daughter’s whereabouts.
He said there had been “huge amounts written with no substance” and that it was not necessary to “bombard people on a daily basis” with Madeleine’s image.
There doesn’t appear to be any sessions on ethics, spreading theories, speculation, or rumors among the available programmes.
Note: Should the content of his blog be changed? It might be different if it were a private blog intended for family or friends versus a highly public one.
What does this comment have to do with finding missing Madeleine? Does this somehow raise public awareness? Her fund has raised $2,000,000 should you perhaps seek some help from media experts while you are there? How about we, “love you madeleine”, “miss you madeleine”, “please return her” ?
Does providing her alleged captors material on how well you or the twins are doing going to help her remember how much she may be missed? With all the expertise at your disposable, it seems odd unless you choose to ignore their advice or they are offering different advice cocerning what to write. It just seems the focus is no longer on her.
Travelled to Edinburgh this afternoon and managed to keep up the aerobic exercise with 25 minutes in the gym.
Please also note the Office of Juvenile Justice and Delinquency Prevention (OJJDP) “NISMART-2”, studies on stranger abductions are 5 years old so while they may be ahead of Europe, they are far from current.
