Attorneys for accused killer Casey Anthony are complaining about the excessive media coverage in Florida of their client. As most everyone is aware, she is charged with first-degree murder in the death of her young daughter, Caylee. They are seeking a change of venue for her trial.

While she and her family continue to generate “news”, some Florida missing children cases could use renewed coverage. The disappearances this year of, Haleigh Cummings from Satsuma, Fl along with missing Adji Desir from Immakolee, Fl. have faded from the headlines. Both remain missing with few updates of efforts to find them.

Recently the parents of missing Madeleine McCann were featured guests on Oprah to mark the second anniversary of her disappearance in Portugal yet Trenton Duckett who has been missing from Leesburg, Fl. since August 2006, receives little if any mention in the press.

When Adji Desir went missing in Immakolee, Fl. an AMBER Alert was not activated. There were none activated in Escondido, Ca. following the disappearance of Amber Dubois nor in Tracy, Ca. in the case of Sandra Cantu. The reason given by authorities, none of them met the criteria for activation.

Critics argue if the alerts are issued too often, people will become desensitized thus ignoring them. So why isn’t this “boy who cried wolf” scenario a concern for states with Silver Alert programs?

There were 128 Silver Alerts activated in North Carolina in 2008. Forty four of them were between Oct-Dec. An additional 67 have been issued as of March 2009.

Silver Alert Criteria

ALL of the following statutory criteria must be met before the N.C. Center for Missing Persons will activate a Silver Alert:

  • The person is believed to be suffering from dementia or other cognitive impairment- regardless of age
  • The person is believed to be missing – regardless of circumstance
  • A legal custodian of the missing person has submitted a missing person’s report to the local law enforcement agency where the person went missing
  • Law enforcement reports the incident to the NC Center for Missing Persons

  • This is in sharp contrast to the number of AMBER Alerts. There were 8 alerts activated for all of 2008 with an additional 5 being activated as of March 2009.

    AMBER Alert Activation Criteria

ALL of the following statutory criteria (GS §143B-499.7) must be met before the NC Center for Missing Persons will activate an AMBER Alert.
    The child is:

  • 17 years old or younger
  • believed to have been abducted,
  • not taken by a parent (unless the child is in danger)
  • not believed to be a runaway or voluntarily missing
  • and the abduction has been reported to and investigated by a law enforcement agency.
  • Are the AMBER Alert criteria too strict or the Silver Alert criteria too lenient?

Psychic Gale St. John is in Immakolee, Fl. to “search” for Adji Desir.

“I’m not here for the media. I’m not here to create a circus. I’m here to find Adji,” she said

If what she does is to conduct a blind drive and get feelings, why would she wait four months to offer her services to help locate a missing 6-year-old who is considered Endangered Missing?  Why do psychics always seem to wait for weeks and months after substantial media coverage to assist instead of when a child first is missing?

Should you desire to tune into a media circus you apparently need only to wait until May.

Oprah Interviews Caylee Anthony’s Grandparents Cindy and George Anthony

This May, grandparents Cindy and George Anthony talk to Oprah about their 2-year-old granddaughter, Caylee Anthony, and the investigation into her death. Their daughter and Caylee’s mother, Casey, is currently being held in custody as she awaits trial for the first-degree murder of her daughter.

This will be the Anthonys’ first sit-down interview together since their granddaughter’s remains were found in December 2008.

Gale St. John who claims to use psychic powers to find missing people is headed to Immakolee, Fl. to aid in the search for Adji Desir who has been missing since Jan 10, 2009. He vanished from his grandmother’s Farm Worker Village home after playing with other children. He was last seen walking away.

Her first order of business is to do a blind drive from the last point where he was seen.  If you want more information on the area she may cover, Naples News has an interactive map you can view and add your own suggestions.

Ms. St. John has also been active in another missing Florida child’s case. According to her website, these are “Gales feelings” regarding the disappearance of  Haleigh Cummings.

Watching Issues with Jane Velez-Mitchell on HLN last night, there was a discussion concerning how police initially handled the case of Sandra Cantu and whether it should have immediately been determined to be an abduction.

There was this comment which most of us would accept at face value.

VELEZ-MITCHELL: Now Bob Blasier, they say there was no indication of an abduction. Do you think things should have been handled differently? In other words, eventually she`s an 8-year-old child, she`s never left her mobile home park on her own before. She`s too young to be a run-away. At a certain point logic tells you this is probably an abduction?

Read the National Runaway Switchboard 2007 Crisis Caller Analysis and you may be surprised.

The number of callers under 12 in 2007 has increased 172 percent over 2000.

Though these children are not believed to be runaways they are open Case Type: Endangered Missing  apparently walking away never to be seen again.

Everlyse Cabrera , 2-years-old, was last seen at home on June 10, 2006. Her foster parents, Manuel and Vhee Carrascal believe she wandered from her home.

Adji Desir , 6 years-old, was last seen on January 10, 2009 in Immakolee, Fl. after playing with friends.

Elian Majano , 2 years-old, was last seen playing at an Irving, Tx  park. In his case an AMBER Alert was issued prompting critics to investigate why.

Haleigh Cummings, 5-years-old, was last known to be sleeping in her home, in the area of Hermit’s Cove in Satsuma, Florida, on the evening of February 9, 2009.

There are two children missing in Florida. In one case a child, 6-year-old Adji, in Immakolee, Fl. was last seen walking down a road by a group of kids while in the other a door was left ajar, with allegedly no signs of forced entry, resulting in the disappearance of 5-year-old Haleigh Cummings in Satsuma, Fl. Her case is being treated as an abduction while that of Adji Desir is not. Authorities in Immakolee have downplayed and defended their decision not to issue an AMBER Alert due to the lack of witnesses to an abduction but has it made a difference in efforts to find him? You might think so based on this comment.

“We’re still treating it as an abduction because, as we said early on, that brings out the highest level of response,” Putnam County Sheriff’s Office Chief Deputy Rick Ryan said Sunday afternoon.

In other developments. the ground search was called off almost a month ago for missing Adji Desir from Immakolee, Fl.

It is expected to be called off today for Haliegh Cummings in Satsuma, Fl.

In Chidester, Arkansas, the ground search for missing Dominick Arceneaux continues.

In all the disappearances, investigators say they will continue to follow leads and tips.

While authorities remain optimistic in their search for Haleigh, there is a much different tone in the search for Dominick Arceneaux.

‘We’ve got nothing,’ FBI says of missing boy

Thomas J. Browne, special agent in charge of the Federal Bureau of Investigation’s Little Rock field office, said the hunt for 3-year-old Dominick Wesley Arceneaux has stalled and called for the public’s help.

Browne urged anyone with a tip – no matter how insignificant – to contact 1-800-CALLFBI immediately. A $15,000 reward has been offered in the case.

“We are grasping at straws, to be honest,” Browne said at a news conference at FBI headquarters in west Little Rock on Monday. “We’ve got nothing.”

Update 02-18-09: Sheriff: Body found identified as missing Ark. boy

LITTLE ROCK, Ark. (AP) — A sheriff in Arkansas says a body found Wednesday has been identified as that of a 3-year-old boy who had been missing for more than a week.

Ouachita County Sheriff David Norwood says searchers found the body of Dominick Arceneaux of Chidester floating in White Oak Lake. Norwood says the boy’s body was about 300 feet down the shoreline from his mother’s mobile home on the southwestern Arkansas lake.
