The parents of missing Madeleine McCann  argue that a European Union wide alert might have allowed authorities to find her in the initial hours of her disappearance. However, the rest of Europe seems to disagree.

“We shouldn’t send out a European alert when a child has been gone for just a few hours,” said German Justice Minister Brigitte Zypries. “The great majority of children return home after two or three days.”

When a child goes missing in the U.S., an AMBER Alert may be activated in neighboring states but rarely would one be issued nationwide nationwide. Does it have to be all or nothing or is there an effective compromise.
