Cindy and George Anthony spoke to CBS’ “Early Show” this morning about their murdered granddaughter, Caylee, and their daughter Casey, the accused killer. They were scheduled to appear on the “The Oprah Winfrey Show” during May sweeps. Did they believe their message could reach a greater audience with Maggie Rodriguez versus Oprah?

Oprah Cancels Interview with Caylee Anthony’s Grandparents, Cindy and George

April 21, 2009—”Based on the Anthonys’ decision to appear on other programs, we have decided not to move forward with their interview on The Oprah Winfrey Show at this time,” an Oprah Winfrey Show spokesperson said.

The body of grandparents Cindy and George Anthonys’ 2-year-old granddaughter, Caylee Anthony, was found in December 2008. Their daughter and Caylee’s mother, Casey, is currently being held in custody as she awaits trial for the first-degree murder of her daughter.

If the interview is indicative of what Oprah guests were to expect, you may be thankfull she will book someone else. Cindy Anthony is also scheduled to speak at the Melanie Ilene Rieger Memorial Conference on May 13 th  from 4:30-5:30 pm as a Keynote Speaker.

Melanie Ilene Rieger, a college student, was murdered by her boyfriend on May 24, 1994. The conference was established in her memory with the hope that others would avoid such tragedy.

Their segment is titled- Cindy & George Anthony, Grandparents of Caylee Anthony
Under Siege: A Homicide Survivor’s Story

It may be interesting to see what insight Cindy offers. Caylee’s disappearance and the subsequent circus surrounding her death could hardly be described as a text book case study in what to do if a child is missing or in dealing with the media, law enforcement or the general public.

They are attempting to start a Foundation after failed attempts by other charities to assist them. The primary purpose of the foundation is supposedly helping families that are dealing with a missing child which is confusing since a $30,000 boat to search for missing children was donated by Kid Finders Network to the Anthony’s even though water apparently played no role in her death.

Maybe the proverbial question is what they want to do when they grow up which sadly is something Caylee will never do.

While reading about future plans to establish “The Haleigh Bug” Foundation, these names immediately came to mind.

John Walsh
Marc Klaas
Patty Wetterling
Kelly Jolkowski
Mark Lunsford (site is being updated)
Colleen Nick
Claudine and Don Ryce
Drew and Joyce Kesse

They all are parents of missing or murdered children who have been instrumental in establishing charities to help others. Some have worked with state and ferderal government to pass laws to protect children by stressing the need for greater awareness of missing or abducted children issues. Others have specifically worked for harsher penalties for the perpertrators of the crimes. Something they all seemed to have was a commitment to a cause and a calling. It is difficult to phathom it was a chosen career path but only they can say for sure.

So which willl “The Haleigh Bug” foundation be, if formally established ?

Someday the question may be answered but for now the focus needs to remain on missing Haleigh Cummings.

“Our goal eventually is to develop this into a charity who helps families of missing children, and we want to allot them a certain period where they don’t have to worry about going to work, how they’re going to take care of the bills. We’re also looking for a career path for Crystal too, to keep her mind going…to keep her strong so I was thinking there’s nobody better to head this up than someone going through this themselves and she’s very excited about it,” said Ragan.

While their daughter, Casey, remains in jail as a suspect in Caylee Anthony’s death, George and Cindy Anthony announced their own intent to WESH2 News to start their own foundation.

Caylee’s grandparents are getting ready to unveil a Caylee Anthony foundation that will have a search and rescue component like a page from the Texas Equusearch playbook. At the same time, they’re coming out against a permanent Caylee memorial along Suburban Drive.

George and Cindy Anthony unveiled a new search boat named for Caylee. They also unveiled plans for a Caylee Marie Anthony Foundation they both will spearhead.

The boat was built by the Anthony’s long time ally Dennis Milstead of Kid Finder’s network with $30,000 donated from the Never Lose Hope Foundation.”

They funded the boat and an ATV to start us out with the search group,” Milstead said.

“I never want to look for a child in the water or the woods and stuff but if that’s what we have to do that’s what we’re going to have to do,” George Anthony said.

Friday, on the Morning Show with Mike and Juliet, Geraldo Rivera, when discussing missing Haleigh Cummings, prefaced a comment with, “What typically happens in these missing white girl cases…”. No one appeared offended nor did they question why he phrased the comment that way. After all she is a missing child regardless of her race or gender and are all missing white girl cases somehow the same? If he had been commenting on missing Adji Desir and said, “missing black boy” there may have been an uproar equal to that of the recent NY Post cartoon.

Later, Geraldo was in Florida to interview her father Ronald Cummings concerning allegations he struck her in the past.

Fox News-

In a contentious, exclusive interview outside his Florida home, Ronald Cummings, the father of missing 5-year-old Haleigh Cummings, blasted new abuse allegations and told FOX News “never, ever have I ever hit my child.”

“Me and my child have an agreement. Daddy, daughter. She has been spanked on her behind the way DCF says that you can take care of disciplining your children,” Cummings told FOX News’ Geraldo Rivera.

Cummings also condemned new allegations that he hit Haleigh’s mom Crystal while she was pregnant, saying friends and family members making the accusations are ‘absolutely lying’ and threatening criminal charges against them.

Responding to sources that told Rivera Cummings had told them he was 75 percent sure who kidnapped Haleigh, the missing girl’s father said, “There is no way — I do not know who took Haleigh. If I had — if I had, uh, five percent of where Haleigh was at, I would be there now and not here.”

Are his comments racist, reckless or just Rivera?

Update 02-23-09:SATSUMA, FL

Fox News anchor Geraldo Rivera could see jail time in Putnam County if he crosses the line again.

The owners of the property where Ronald Cummings lives filed a trespassing warning against Rivera following an interview Saturday night that turned heated.

Update 03-19-09: Haleigh’s father hires attorney in wake of abuse allegations

Haleigh Cumming’s father has retained an attorney, after the mother of his two children and her attorney accused him of being abusive on national television.

The Palatka-based law firm Kimball and Snider, P.A. released a statement this afternoon saying it will be representing Ronald Cummings, 25, on a pro bono basis. The firm will coordinate Cummings’ public appearances and will also represent Cummings in a possible custody battle over Haleigh’s younger brother, Ronald Cummings Jr., 4, between Cummings and the children’s mother, Crystal Sheffield, 23.

“The mother was previously denied custody in court and allegations of abuse against Ronald were judicially dismissed,” the firm said in the statement, adding that Cummings considered the abuse allegations a “cheap shot and publicity stunt that detracts from the search for Haleigh.”

The firm will not be representing Cummings’ 17-year-old wife, Misty Croslin. Croslin was the last person to see Haleigh, who disappeared from the home Croslin shared with Cummings and his children late Feb. 9 or early Feb. 10. She and Cummings married on March 12.

On the Bill O’Reilly show, Geraldo provided this tease for his show  Geraldo at Large  to air on Saturday March 28th at 10:00 p.m. EST. He continued his verbal assault on Ron Cummings, missing Haleigh Cummings  father, calling him “scum” and offered an update on Casey Anthony referring to her as a “22-year-old slut”.

Casey Anthony is alleged to have waited five weeks to tell anyone her daughter Caylee was missing. In Towanda, Kansas, apparently it has taken someone nine years to report a 11-12 year old boy “missing”, according to Butler County Sheriff Craig Murphy. Authorities have not released the child’s identity which is why a quick search of the NCMEC displays no children listed who are the approximate age of the child or who went missing in 1999 except for April Wiss or Tabitha Brewer.

El Dorado, Kan.
Butler County Sheriff’s Officers, along with assistance from the Sedgwick County K-9 Unit, are searching just south of the city of Towanda today for clues in a case of a missing boy.

The search was prompted by a call to the Missing Children Hotline in Wichita about three weeks ago.

The boy, thought to be around age 11 or 12, went missing in 1999, but was not reported missing until now, according to Butler County Sheriff Craig Murphy.

Update 01-03-09 The Wichita Eagle is reporting the missing chid was either taken by the State or was an unreported runaway from his adoptive parents.

One answer found in missing-boy case

His name is Adam Joseph Herrman.
He came to his foster parents when he was about 2, and a few years later they adopted him and his two younger siblings, says a relative.
And then, in 1999, when he was around 11 or 12, he may have disappeared while living in Towanda, Butler County Sheriff Craig Murphy has said.
Over time, his adoptive parents have told relatives that the state took the boy back or that he ran away, according to the relative, who asked not to be named.

Apparently that isn’t the same story they have been telling all relatives according to his biological sister.

Update 01-05-09 Biological family demands answers after boy disappears 10 years ago

“How does he go missing for ten years and no one says anything about it until last month?” asked Tiffany Broadfoot. She’s the biological sister of Adam Herrman.
Adam and two other siblings of Broadfoot were adopted by Doug and Valerie Herrman after parental rights were stripped from their biological parents. Both of the biological parents have since moved away from Kansas.
“I feel that if they weren’t taken away – and I’m not pointing any fingers at anybody – but this wouldn’t have happened,” said Irvin Groeninger, Adam’s biological father. “I don’t understand why he’s been gone for 9 years and nobody reported it. It knocked me for a loop.”

Update 01-05-09

BUTLER COUNTY, Kansas – Butler County officials said in a press conference Monday they still do not know what happened to Adam Hermann, of Towanda, when he disappeared nearly 10 years ago.
Monday they said they found one answer they were looking for in the investigation, but would not say what that is. They did say that no human remains were found on the property they searched in Towanda last week and they do not know if Adam is dead or alive.

Relatives say missing boy was abused

Not surprisingly, Adoptive mother denies she abused missing boy but admits in the article she continued to accept $700 per month in accept state adoption subsidies payments for Adam until his 18th birthday. She says she didn’t report him missing because she feared authorities would remove his siblings. It isn’t clear if that would have resulted in a loss of income had that happened.

When did it become ok for a child to runaway from home and the parents not be responsible; biological, adoptive or otherwise? Could they not report him as a runaway whether they felt any responsibility or not for his actions?

Adam’s Sister: Tip On Missing Boy From Her

Kansas SRS confirms the investigation into Adam Herrman began with Crystal’s questions about Adam.  An SRS spokeswoman says once SRS realized that Adam was missing, case workers contacted the Exploited and Missing Children’s Unit with Wichita police and the investigation started.

The spokeswoman says SRS is now going through all paperwork with cases involving the Herrman’s, trying find more information.  She says case workers should have all the files read in about a week.

The Kansas Department of Social and Rehabilitation Services (SRS) may have been down this path before but under less scrutiny.

WICHITA, Kan. (AP) — A boy whose disappearance went unreported for 10 years was once taken away from his adoptive parents, then returned days later, Kansas’ social services agency said Thursday.

Adam Herrman was in protective custody for two days in 1996 after a report of physical abuse, said Michelle Ponce, spokeswoman for the state Department of Social and Rehabilitation Services. The boy was returned to his adoptive parents, Valerie and Doug Herrman, after authorities reviewed the evidence and found the report unsubstantiated.

“We are doing a thorough review of all our case records involving Adam and his family,” Ponce said.

Adoptive Parents Named as Suspects in Herrman Case

Valerie and Doug Herrman have moved from persons of interest to suspects in the Adam Herrman missing persons case.

Butler County Sheriff Craig Murphy confrims for KWCH the department is ready call Adam’s adoptive parents suspects, but says no charges have been filed and no arrests have been made.

According to Butler County Attorney Jan Satterfield, there is the potential for first degree murder charges.

Adam Herrman went missing from his Towanda home 10 years ago, but no one reported it until just last month. Several searches have been conducted in the last few weeks, but no human remains have been found.

Update 01-24-09: Search for missing boy to continue today along Whitewater River

Butler County investigators this morning planned to search again along the Whitewater River near Towanda for remains of Adam Herrman.

Adam disappeared in 1999, when he was 11, while living at a Towanda mobile home park. Investigators planned to look again along the Whitewater River, on the west side of town, Butler County Sheriff Craig Murphy has said.

As with a search for Adam earlier this month, investigators will be assisted by anthropology experts and search dogs, Murphy said.

Today’s search will be the second of three planned searches along the river, Murphy said.

The search was expected to begin around 8 a.m. and go farther south along the Whitewater, for about 2 miles.

Update 02-09-09 Search yields no clues in Herrman case

A third search along the Whitewater River failed to find clues that might solve the Adam Herrman mystery.

But Butler County Sheriff Craig Murphy didn’t sound discouraged after Saturday’s search for the boy who disappeared a decade ago at age 11. Murphy said the search is only one part of a methodical investigation.

“It’s a very hot case,” he said. “We have a lot of focus on it.”

Update 02-22-09

BUTLER COUNTY, Kansas – Butler County authorities conducted their last planned search for clues in the disappearance of Adam Herrman, a Towanda boy who went missing nearly 10 years ago.

Authorities began searching the area around the Towanda mobile home park where Adam lived when he went missing for the third time Saturday at 10 a.m. The search only lasted a short time on Saturday. It was the fourth search of the area in the last couple months.

“We’ve done everything we can do out here,” said Butler County Sheriff Craig Murphy.

Update 03-31-09:  Case of missing Kansas boy sent to prosecutor

EL DORADO – For the most part during a news conference Monday, Butler County Sheriff Craig Murphy declined to reveal his thinking about the mysterious disappearance of 11-year-old Adam Herrman.

Murphy summoned reporters after promising to notify them when his detectives turned their investigative findings over to County Attorney Jan Satterfield. That happened Friday, when detectives delivered a nearly 3-foot-tall stack of papers, he announced.

Now, it’s up to Satterfield to decide whether criminal charges will be brought against Adam’s adoptive parents a decade after he disappeared.

Although Murphy didn’t reveal much, he said this: “I feel there is enough to charge the parents — with what, is not up to me, and I’m not going to speculate on it. But I see charges there.”

Casey Anthony, 22, was indicted Tuesday afternoon on the charges by a grand jury after an exhaustive four-month-long investigation into her small daughter’s whereabouts.

She is scheduled to appear in Orange County Court at about 9 a.m. EDT, MyFOXOrlando.com reported

A spokesman for Casey Anthony’s defense team suggested in a cable news interview that her little girl Caylee is dead — but later her lead attorney said the comments were taken out of context.

Todd Black, speaking on behalf of 22-year-old Casey Anthony’s lawyer Jose Baez, discussed the first-degree murder charges against Anthony in her daughter’s disappearance.
