Today on the Oprah Show  she made this plea for funding support for the “Adam Walsh Child Protection and Safety Protection Act of 2006″.

The Adam Walsh Child Protection and Safety Act was passed on July 25, 2006—20 years after Adam Walsh’s abduction. The act established a National Sex Offender Registry law, but recent news reports reveal most states will not be in compliance with the law by the upcoming July 2009 deadline. If senators and state representatives don’t comply with and fully fund the act, it will expire.

Melissa Chantel Huckaby, 28, was charged with the special circumstances of kidnapping, rape with a foreign object and lewd or lascivious conduct with a child in the death of Sandra Cantu. San Joaquin County Superior Court Judge Richard Vlavianos read the charge. She remained silent except to answer “yes” when the judge asked her if she wanted a public defender. Ellen Schwarzenberg, a public defender, was appointed to represent her. as She will be back in court on April 24.

Update 05-22-09: Accused killer of Tracy girl faces new poison charges

STOCKTON — A Tracy woman accused of kidnapping and killing 8-year-old Sandra Cantu is facing additional charges when she returns to court this afternoon.

In an amended complaint filed late Thursday afternoon, Melissa Huckaby, 28, was also charged with one count of child endangerment and two counts of furnishing someone a harmful substance.

If convicted of murder, Huckaby could face the death penalty.

Two of the new charges stem from a Jan. 17 incident, when a woman in the Orchard Estates Mobile Home Park where Huckaby and Sandra also lived, claimed Huckaby took her 7-year-old child without her or her family’s permission.

Lora Polk, 41, said when the child was returned about two hours later, she was acting strange and was taken to the hospital, where doctor’s tested her and reportedly found she had muscle relaxers in her system.

Huckaby is also accused of giving an unspecified drug to a man named Daniel Plowman on or about March 2. On March 3 Plowman was apparently arrested by Tracy police on suspicion of driving under the influence, but he was never charged with a crime.

Update 08-18-09: Grand jury indicts Melissa Huckaby in killing of Sandra Cantu

STOCKTON — A San Joaquin County grand jury has returned a five-count indictment against Melissa Huckaby, accused of kidnapping, raping and killing 8-year-old Sandra Cantu, of Tracy.

The indictment, which will send the case to trial, was handed down July 31 but read in court for the first time Monday afternoon. Huckaby, in shackles and with several fresh scratches on her forehead, appeared with her attorney.

Huckaby, 28, was indicted on charges of murder with three special circumstances: kidnapping, lewd and lascivious acts on a child and rape with an instrument. The grand jury also added a charge of having sex with a child under 10 years old.

They also indicted the 28-year-old Tracy woman on one count of furnishing a harmful substance in the case of Daniel Plowman, of Hayward, and one count of furnishing a harmful substance and child abuse/endangerment in the case of another unnamed 7-year-old girl. Those counts are unrelated to Sandra’s death
