On August 27, 2006 Trenton Duckett was reported missing from his home in Leesburg, Fl.  After appearing on the Nancy Grace show to discuss his disappearance, his mother, Melinda Duckett, committed suicide. Her family subsequently filed a wrongful death lawsuit against Nancy Grace, and CNN alleging Grace inflicted emotional distress on the parents and Melinda Duckett.

Last year, Clear Channel Outdoor-Jacksonville Division, Florida Outdoor Advertising Association (FOAA) and the Florida Department of Law Enforcement (FDLE) donated several billboards to raise the public’s awareness for several Florida missing children. Among them were billboards for missing  Kamiyah Mobley, Jarkeuis Adside, Zachary Michael-Cole Bernhardt, Bryan Dossantos-Gomes, and  Trenton Duckett.

In South Carolina, a Billboard to be erected for missing NY teen Brittanee Drexel.

A large roadside billboard will go up sometime in the next week that features what has become one of Myrtle Beach’s only unsolved missing persons cases.

The billboard will be placed near the North Santee community in Georgetown County and feature a large picture of 17-year-old Brittanee Drexel who vanished from Ocean Boulevard in Myrtle Beach on April 25.

Most of the 2,726 children listed at the National Center for Missing & Exploited Children (NCMEC) have no rewards payable for their save return. For those that do, there have been few updates in their disappearances. When rewards are announced, they seem to increase the number of tips concerning the missing child but in many instances the tips seem to be personal theories more than significant leads, so how effective are they?

At one time there was a £2.5m or at today’s exchange rate $ 3,776,429 reward for missing Madeleine McCann. The reward amount is no longer listed on the site so whether it is still available is unclear.

However, these are some other available rewards from some random missing children cases. In some instances they of are offered for information or for the child’s safe return, while in others it is for information leading to the arrest and conviction of the person(s) responsible for the abduction.

Amber Dubois            $60,000
Brittanee Drexel        $12,000
Adji Desir                   $23,000

Attorneys for accused killer Casey Anthony are complaining about the excessive media coverage in Florida of their client. As most everyone is aware, she is charged with first-degree murder in the death of her young daughter, Caylee. They are seeking a change of venue for her trial.

While she and her family continue to generate “news”, some Florida missing children cases could use renewed coverage. The disappearances this year of, Haleigh Cummings from Satsuma, Fl along with missing Adji Desir from Immakolee, Fl. have faded from the headlines. Both remain missing with few updates of efforts to find them.

Recently the parents of missing Madeleine McCann were featured guests on Oprah to mark the second anniversary of her disappearance in Portugal yet Trenton Duckett who has been missing from Leesburg, Fl. since August 2006, receives little if any mention in the press.

In this story from ABC Action News in Florida, authorities released a sketch of a person of interest in an alleged abduction. The 8-year-old victim was found but apparently he was confused on details surrounding his abduction. Interestingly there were no signs of forced entry into the child’s home but then again it wouldn’t be the first time in Florida a child may have been abducted under similar circumstances. Authorities in Satsuma, Fl are searching for Haleigh Cummings who was allegedly abducted from her home.

He also has a tattoo of a bear with an open mouth on his right bicep, the boy told detectives.

He was wearing wearing blue jeans, possibly rolled up, and a white t-shirt.

The child also told detectives the man may smoke or chew tobacco.

The person’s vehicle is described as a older, light blue or gray pick-up truck with a black interior and center gear shift.

The truck has a Diamond Plate tool box and the boy said a muzzled dog , possibly a Boxer, was in the bed of the truck.

If you have any information about the incident or this man, call 911 or the Sheriff’s Office at (352) 726-1121.

Note: Crystal River is approximately 109 miles from Satsuma but 48 miles from Leesburg, Fl. where Trenton Duckett went missing in August of 2006..

When a child goes missing there is at times a love/hate relationship with the media. Some seek it at all cost while others attempt to avoid any delving by the press into their personal lives.  While some argue the race,  gender or age may dictate the amount of coverage, it appears the cirmcumstances surrounding the child’s disappearance and the actions of family members can play a significant role.

In May of 2007, Madeleine McCann’s disappearance demonstrated new levels of interest through an on-line web campaign and pleas from celebrities. The site findmadeleine garnered millions of hits and millions of dollars were raised in efforts to find her. In the end however, she remains missing.

London-Gerry McCann, whose daughter Madeleine’s 2007 disappearance from a Portuguese resort sparked an international manhunt, told lawmakers that the mass-media coverage of the search for his child degenerated into a voyeuristic “Kate and Gerry show.”

“Our family have been the focus of some of the most sensationalist, untruthful, irresponsible and damaging reporting in the history of the press,” he told a panel of lawmakers investigating media standards, privacy and libel.

Similar complaints have been voiced by the father of  Haleigh Cummings who has been missing for over a month from Satsuma, Fl.

Fox News- The father of missing Florida girl Haleigh Cummings claimed he doesn’t want the media to focus on his personal life — a day after getting married and flying to New York to appear on national TV.

Ronald Cummings, 25, and his new bride, 17-year-old Misty Croslin, appeared on NBC’s “Today Show” Friday morning. They got married Thursday in Putnam County, Fla. then flew to New York.

Cummings said he didn’t know what his personal life had to do with national television, and stressed that the media needs to get his daughter’s face out there.

Another family which may be unhappy with press coverage, for different reasons, are the adopted parents of  missing Jaliek Rainwalker,  Stephen Kerr and Jocelyn McDonald. The adoptive father, Stephen Kerr was named a person of interest“ in his disappearance .

In the case of murdered Caylee Anthony, her grandparents have often been at odds with the media. They have been the subject of countless stories with their every move covered since she first was reported missing. At times they seemed to try to avoid being in the spotlight only to generating more interest in possible motives concerning their actions. The mother of murdered Caylee continues to generate interest from many as she awaits trial for her alleged involvement.

Orlando Senteniel-In the pre-Anthony days, jail spokesman Allen Moore said, he typically would log 80 to 120 contacts with news reporters per month. In July — when Caylee was reported missing and Anthony first jailed — Moore logged 357 media contacts.

By August, the volume of media contacts grew so large that Moore estimates it at 463 for the month.

“In the 12 1/2 years I have worked as P.I.O. [public information officer] for Orange County Corrections, no case has generated this much media activity for such a long period of time,” he said.

Those not expressing concerns with the media are the families of these missing children.
