Selvin Alfredo Ortiz has been charged with capital murder in the death of his four-month-old daughter. He is believed to have fled to El Salvador once charges were filed. His wife, Sonia Calderon Ruiz was charged with tampering and is currently in the Dallas County Jail.
Though the story is current, the little girl is presumed to have been murdered two years earlier.
Four-month-old Prisma Ortiz Ruiz disappeared more than two years ago but wasn’t reported missing to Garland police until last August, authorities say.
On June 10, 2006, 2-and-a-half year-old Everlyse Cabrera “walked away” from her home in Las Vegas. When asked for an explanation, her foster parents, Vhee and Manuel Carrascal, simply refused to speak to police. She remains missing.
According to the Office of Juvenile Justice and Delinquency Prevention (OJJDP), there are approximately 500,000 unreported children who are missing each year. Most either wander off from parents or guardians while others are runaways or can be “lost” in the foster care system.
In Florida, there are 325 Children reported as missing at the Department of Children and Familes. The site suggestions more information can be found at the Florida Department of Law Enforcement web site however, it requires you to click on the National Center for Missing & Exploited Children (NCMEC) logo which takes you to their site. Unfortunately, many of the children are not listed.
If reported missing children aren’t listed at the NCMEC or at the FDLE site, then is it surprising unreported missing children’s lives can turn to tragedy with few people aware of their plights? It is important to note, most States, unlike Florida, do not even publicly make available a list of the names of missing children in their foster care systems.
